Dying Above Mono Lake

Driving, I came to a rise on the escarpment above Mono Lake just shy of the Nevada line. It was hot and my air was off, the needle pushing well over half way. Climbing 3,000 feet in a short few miles in 112 heat will do that. My head spun, my stomach dropped. It was sweltering but cool beads of sweat gathered on my forehead. My breath struggling, it felt like the wind had been sucked out of me — that full soreness that comes from a bad flu was […]

The Stought Brothers: “The Mystery at the Market”

Chapter 10: "We have to get out of here!" Heathcliff said. "Wait a minute," Reggie said. "Where’s the gun Rasheed had?" "He must have lost it or dropped it inside the fence," Dan said. "So what?" Heathcliff said. "He’s still a terrorist and it’s not our job to stop him." "What if he gets away and hurts someone else? Or what if Al-Sayf has a backup plan to attack the hospital? Don’t we want to find that out?" Reggie asked. "Rasheed will be able to tell us," Dan said. Rasheed […]

The Stought Brothers: “The Mystery at the Market”

Chapter 9: The Stought brothers and Dan told the police what had happened. They also explained that their father worked at the hospital and were worried about him. The Lagos police made sure the boys were okay. They instructed a medical team to check Heathcliff since he took a blow to his head. Reggie called their mother and told her what happened while the medical team quickly examined Heathcliff. "We’ve contacted the Lagos Tranquility General Hospital and told them to evacuate," Officer Wiwa told the boys after the medical team […]

Apply Now to the 2017 Calliope Authors Workshop

Writing tends to be a lonely pursuit. Hours spent writing characters and imagining storylines doesn’t exactly count as social interaction. Plus, how is a writer to know if their manuscript is even working? The answer can be found in a strong writerly community. But if you are a writer that cares about liberty, free markets and the founding principles of America, you’ll find that your options for community are quite limited. Last year, I stumbled upon a little saving grace: the Calliope Authors Workshop, a program dedicated to fiction and […]

The Stought Brothers: “The Mystery at the Market”

Chapter 8: "What are you doing back here?" Dan asked the Stought brothers when they arrived at his house again. "I told you to get out of here." "We came back to apologize," Reggie told him. "We?" Heathcliff asked while looking at Reggie. Reggie ignored him. "I’m sorry I said I wanted to record the game. I shouldn’t have done that," he told Dan. Dan glared at Reggie and Heathcliff. Reggie exhaled. "And I’m sorry I acted like you were cheating, and that I showed off my phone," he added. […]

The Stought Brothers: “The Mystery at the Market”

Chapter 7: The Stought brothers arrived at Samuel and Fatima Gwani’s condo. Both the Gwanis were there and so were Reggie and Heathcliff’s parents. The boys told them what they had overheard on the streets on their way home. "What do you think, Samuel?" Geoffrey asked their host. "Have you ever heard of Al-Sayf?" Samuel nodded his hid and stroked his chin. "Al-Sayf is a terrorist group," he said. "They have been in Nigeria for about five years now. But I have only heard of them carrying out attacks in […]
